Socorro Soccer Teams Fall

Mountain Mail Reports

The Socorro girls soccer team started off a stretch where it will play five games in the next six days with a 3-1 loss at the Bosque School on Tuesday.
Sophomore Dezirae Armijo, who was the state’s leading scorer last year, made her first appearance of the season and scored for the Lady Warriors (2-3-2). Armijo had been out with an ankle injury. Armijo’s goal was assisted by Angelina Stanzione.
“We came out strong and scored first and then we got a little complacent,” Socorro coach Mitch Carrejo said. “We let Bosque be the aggressor and played at their speed instead of attacking.
“We gave up two goals on corner kicks in the first half and we played them even in the second half. We gave up a goal in the final 10 minutes.”
The Lady Warriors will be at Belen Thursday, host Santa Fe Prep on Saturday and Bernalillo on Monday and play at Pojoaque on Tuesday.

Boys Soccer

The Socorro boys soccer team got a look at the two-time defending state champions as the young Warriors fell to the Bosque School 10-0 Tuesday.
“They are just so much bigger than we were,” Socorro coach Kenny Gonzales said. “Their coach said afterward, you guys have a lot of freshmen and I told him we also had a lot of eighth graders. He said that he couldn’t wait to see us in a couple of years and we would be a force to be reckoned with.”
The Warriors will play at the Roswell tournament this weekend.

Cross Country

The Socorro cross country teams opened their season at Alamogordo last week.
The girls finished sixth overall but freshman Danya Guerro won the race individually, setting a new course record in 20 minutes and 35 seconds. DamiAna Contreras finished eighth individually for the Lady Warriors.
The boys team finished fourth overall as five Warriors finished within a minute of each other, coach Steven Montoya said.
Tim Abeyta was the top finisher for the Warrior as he was 11th.
Socorro will host its own invitational at 4 p.m. Friday at the New Mexico Tech Golf Course.
