Lady Warriors Win Girls Soccer Tourney In Roswell

Mountain Mail Reports

The Lady Warriors were the only 3A school in the four-team Roswell-Goddard tournament last weekend.
And Socorro coach Mitch Carrejo only brought 12 players on the trip.
That did not stop Socorro from winning the tournament, posting a 2-0-1 record in the pool play tournament.
“Everybody else had 18 to 20 players on their roster,” Carrejo said. “The girls were tremendous. Everybody contributed and played really well. I am really proud of them.
The Lady Warriors opened with a 1-1 tie against Roswell Friday. Then on Saturday morning, Socorro topped Goddard 7-1. After 30 minutes of rest, the Lady Warriors went back out and defeated Artesia 3-1.
Angelina Stanzione continued to lead the offense, scoring the majority of the goals. DaMiana Contreras, JeriAna Contreras and Bryn Botko also scored.
A big key, Carrejo said, was moving Zoe Howell from midfield to sweeper.
“She has done a great job and really stabilized us back there.”
Carrejo said Stanzione already has 12 goals this season. And the Lady Warriors’ leading scorer from last year, Dezirae Armijo, has yet to play this season after injuring her ankle.
“Dezirae is dying to play,” Carrejo said. “It’s been a blessing in disguise because the other girls now know they can play and win and gain some confidence. We will be that much better when she gets back.”
The Lady Warriors will be at Bosque Farms on Sept. 7.

Boys Soccer

The Socorro boys soccer team opened its season with three tough opponents as it fell to Valencia 8-0, Bernalillo 4-2 and Santa Fe Prep 6-0.
The Warriors have just one senior and two juniors on their roster. The rest are sophomores, freshmen and eighth graders.
Socorro (0-3) will host Rehoboth on Sept. 7.

Volleyball

The Socorro girls volleyball team defeated Magdalena, which was coming off a loss to Carizozzo, Tuesday night. No other details were available.
The Lady Warriors will host Quemado on Sept. 9.

Cross country

The Socorro cross country teams started their season with a scrimmage against Valencia last week.
This weekend, both teams will travel to Alamogordo and the following week, they will host the Socorro Invitational.
